Public transit

What is it?

VIA Metropolitan Transit operates the bus system for San Antonio. VIA offers bus service for everyone from daily commuters to the casual bus rider.

Why should I do it?

Riding the bus to work or school gives you time to read, relax, and simply enjoy the trip. Many VIA buses are even equipped with Wi-Fi! Additionally, according to the National Safety Council, riding the bus is 170 times safer than automobile travel. Transit is also one of the cheapest commute options. Riding the bus helps save money on gasoline, vehicle maintenance and parking. At only $38 per month for a VIA bus pass, the expense pales in comparison to the $216 per month it costs to commute to work in a single occupancy vehicle. And like carpoolers and vanpoolers, bus riders can also get rewards for recording their bus trips on NuRide

How do I ride the bus?

Bexar County residents may visit the VIA Metropolitan Transit Website for more information on bus routes, Park and Ride centers, and fare pricing. VIA also offers special fares and rates for employers interested in providing bus passes to their employees through their VIA Works Program. Residents of Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, and Wilson Counties may contact AACOG’s Alamo Regional Transit (ART) at (866) 889-7433 to inquire about the availability of transit services.
